ALL West Lancs Primary Languages hub meeting- songs

In March our primary languages meeting was about how we use songs in our teaching.

Here are the suggestions of the participants, who were all given a microphone for their contributions:-)

  • Take Ten in Spanish, French or German (http://www.take10.org.uk/) - fantastic DVDs showing dances and songs, and the book is full of great ideas! We watched Jean Petit qui danse with the dance, a similar video is here:

  • Grupo Encanto: there are lots of videos on Youtube here. At the meeting we did the actions for "Soy una taza"- food or restaurant topic and "Chuchuwa" - body topic and "Este puente..".

Other suggested songs by Grupo Encanto: "Con mi dedito", "Vuela la luna", "Había una vez un avión".

  • Boca Beth on youtube

  • Ay las frutas

  • To practise vowels: Un burriquito como tú by Peret

  • Los Trotamundos: we watched a number song and "Un limón y medio limón". The songs come with karaoke versions! We didn't find a web link during the hub, but I managed to find one at home later here.
  • a French one: tchik et tchak for body parts

More suggestions:
  • sing new vocabulary to familiar tunes
  • do a military march with the new vocabulary
KS1 songs on my previous blog post here.

More ideas on Sue Cave's page, she runs the Thames Valley Primary Hub and they had a songs hub the day after ours! http://www.cavelanguages.co.uk/thames-valley-primary-hub

Before the meeting, I asked the Facebook LiPS (Languages in Primary School) group about their favourite songs and groups, and here are the answers:

West Lancs ALL Primary Languages Hub - 3rd meeting

The next West Lancashire ALL Primary Hub meeting will be on 14/01/2015. We will focus on the grammar part of the new PoS and discuss our favourite grammar activities.

Pupils should be taught to...
...understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where
relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency
verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to
build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English.
Languages programmes of study: key stage 2
National curriculum in England

Our hub offers peer to peer support to staff involved in primary languages, please come and share your ideas and thoughts with us!
This will be our 3rd meeting, everybody is welcome, find out about what we have done before here.

ALL West Lancs Hub 1st meeting- a few words

I am pleased to say that The West Lancs Primary ALL Hub (previous blog post ) had its first meeting last Wednesday in Burscough. The meeting took place in my primary school's staffroom, there were about 11 and half of us, a real variety of language professionals - the Head of MFL from Burscough Priory College,2 teaching assistants who  deliver French in KS1/KS2, teachers/ directors of language companies (LCF and Euroclub schools), a language adviser, a student teacher who will be an NQT from September with languages responsibility, a subject coordinator, a German teacher, the Spanish teacher from the primary school next door and we had a French teacher from the Wirral (her website: Barbara Gleave).

Here is what happened:
  • I introduced myself, I talked about the ALL and recommended that everybody should join the UK's major subject association for teachers of foreign languages (http://www.all-languages.org.uk/). I explained what a hub was and that it could take a range of formats: ours would be about networking, discussing professional issues, sharing ideas and best practice. I emphasized that I was "only a teacher" not  a trainer or a consultant, and I could share classroom experience or help with Spanish upskilling.  More information here: ALL primary hubs.
  • We all said a few words about ourselves and then...
  • We got right in the middle of the discussion about the new PoS (for the document click here). We also talked about schemes of work (most use our own), how long our lessons were (from 15 minutes to 60 minutes), language policies and transition to high school.
  • We decided that in our next meeting (in October), we will all share a resource we really like. Details to follow.
The meeting was very dynamic, there was not a moment of silence, we were all busy sharing our thoughts. I loved the dialogue, the conversation in an informal environment,  and just sitting at the same table with like minded people who all made an effort to travel to Burscough in their free time.

I made goodie bags for the participants, they all had an "I love languages" certificate attached to them:

Inside I put ALL flyers, stickers, resources for EDL : Passports and "Languages take you further" booklets (get them for free, read this blog.) Linguascope sent us a separate bag of flyers and freebies.Thank you The Language Stickers Company, Golden Daffodils, Linguascope, Little Linguist for offering prizes and freebies.

Janine, who was promoting German, gave us this book: Franzi und Felix by the Goethe Institut. Read more about this resource!

Thank you Vicky Cooke, Sue Cave and Eleanor Cobbe for your helpful emails.

And thank you, Gruffalo, for posting the hub flyers one by one in the post box! I may not have the best organising skills and expertise to run a hub, but I have you to support me:-)

Tengo, tienes, tiene: Mission Impossible with Greg Horton

In April I went to  Greg Horton's  ALL Active Learning session, where he showed us fantastic activities for the languages classroom. I have already blogged about  his tense dance  before, now I will tell you about how I adapted the Mission Impossible conjugation for my primary pupils!

The new Languages Programmes of Study states that children should understand and apply high frequency verbs by the end of KS2. In Year 6 all my pupils know three singular forms of the verb "tener" (tengo, tienes, tiene), this week we added the plural forms. I made a PP with the following sentences:

Tenemos un canal. ( In Burscough there is one!)
¿Tenéis calor? ( We are in a very warm classroom in Year 6:-)
Tienen una playa. (Our penpals have one in Spain).

We have added some actions for the verbs :
Tengo:we point to ourselves with one hand
Tienes:we point to the one sitting next to us with one hand
Tiene:we point to somebody who is sitting in the other end of the classroom with one hand

Tenemos:we point to ourselves with two hands
Tenéis: we point to the ones sitting next to us with two hands
Tienen: we point far away, to the other end of the classroom with two hands and think of our penpals who have a beach in Spain.

I played the "Mission Impossible" theme song and they had to walk around, do the actions and say the words. The first word (tengo) comes in the 23rd second of the video, then the rest follows with the same tune. You will understand me once you listen to the song! After the first minute I stopped the music because it changed and it was no use, and also, there was a bit of overexcitement in the classroom, and we needed to calm down. The pupils were allowed to shoot with their hands while pointing, they loved it, even in first person singular! It would work better with 4 verbs in each singular and plural, but I just let them do an extra shooting after tiene and tienen.

More Greg Horton on my friend Barbara's blog: Back to Back, a very entertaining way of "testing" the pupils.
Thank you Greg Horton, and also, thank you ALL (Association for Language Learning) for organising high quality CPD events! If you are not a member of the ALL yet, join now on their website: http://www.all-languages.org.uk/ , £36 only. Because I am an ALL member, Greg Horton's training session cost me £10 (a whole morning), and I learnt so much! What are you waiting for?:-)

The first West Lancs Primary ALL Hub

In April me and my friend Sue (French teacher) went to the ALL Language World Conference in Lancaster where we listened to very inspiring presentations, and on the train journey back home we decided that it was time to act and set up a Primary Hub in West Lancashire!
The Association for Language  Learning has several of these hubs in the country, but in my area there aren't any...I always travel hours for CPD, but who knows..... maybe there is a language teacher in every corner of West Lancashire waiting to share good practice! We are hoping to meet up every half term/term to support each other, share ideas and resources.
Learning a language in primary schools will be compulsory in England from September, it is such an exciting time for everybody now!
Here is the flyer:
(The first one is hosted by me only, Sue has a training and will join us later.)

If you are local, please come along, it would be nice to meet like minded people.
If you want to give me advice on how to run a hub, feel free to do so! I am very enthusiastic but have no experience at organising meetings/events. I have already been contacted and given lots of help by Vicky Cooke and Sue Cave who run primary hubs. Thank you ladies!
If you can't come, please spread the word about this hub, you can share this blog post on Facebook and Twitter if you scroll to the bottom of the page.
And finally, if you wish to donate a prize, freebies, send some leaflets or be a speaker in the future, get in touch, you will make us very happy!

Find out more about the Association for Language Learners here.
I have been a member for years, and I have attended great CPD sessions, received the Languages Today magazines and attended the very inspiring Language World Conference at a discount price. All this for £36 a year! Bargain!

See you on the 9th of July, in Burscough!

I am this excited about meeting you:-)

Greg Horton's tense dance - my primary version

On a Saturday morning last month, I went to an ALL CPD event in Manchester called "Active Learning" by Greg Horton. It was absolutely amazing, he really got us out in the middle of the dance floor, we laughed and learnt a lot. We promised to try his activities immediately in the classroom, and I have included something "active" in most of my lessons ever since then.
The "tense dance" is suitable for secondary learners, you dance with a partner, who says a sentence in present/past/future and you have to move accordingly.
Present: one step to the side
Past: one step backwards
Future: one step forwards
Opinion: twirl:-)

In primary school we only speak in present tense, so I came up with different challenges for my classes today.

Year 3

Weather sentence with a silent letter: one step forwards!

Weather sentence without a silent letter: one step backwards!

Weather sentence with an adverb: one step sideways!

Weather question: twirl!

Year 4

Sentence with a feminine noun: move forwards!
Sentence with a masculine noun: move backwards!
Sentence with an adjective: move sideways!
2 verbs in a sentence: sentence: twirl!

Year 5

Sentence "on the hour": move forwards!
Sentence with "half past": move backwords!
A question: move sideways!
Opinion: twirl!

It was a loud and messy activity, we loved it! I demonstrated the dance beforehand with a volunteer, and it was so funny:-) I even put some background music on ("Jota de los toros", our eTwinning partner Natalia sent us from Valladolid), so the noise level was similar to a Saturday night in the disco! I walked around, helped out with the sentences and danced with the shy ones.

The PowerPoint was up for support, but I made it clear that they could use their own sentences. They took turns saying a sentence each. The classroom was just about the right size, but next week I will take them to the hall for the dance.

Thank you Greg for this fantastic idea, I remember you travelled for 5 hours to get to Manchester, but it was well worth it, you made about a hundred children laugh and enjoy their active learning today!
